Image to vector halftone SVG

Screen any PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG into dots and see exactly what the SVG will hold: how many dot elements, which plate groups, and the physical size the file carries.

How it works

From artwork to film in four steps

  1. 01

    Load the image.

Upload or paste art, or start with the Streetwear Gradient Brand Logo. Uploads keep your current settings.

  2. 02

    Set LPI and shape.

Lower LPI means fewer, larger dots. The node count and plate groups update with every change.

  3. 03

    Read the structure.

The SVG panel lists each <g id="plate-…"> group, its dot count and element type, plus the inch size.

  4. 04

    Export the SVG.

The Pro SVG writes every dot as a real element at true size, with no embedded images or filters.

SVG elements

What each dot becomes in the file

The element type follows the dot shape, so a file is predictable before you open it.

Dot shape to SVG element
Dot shapeElementGeometry
Round<circle>Radius = pitch × √(coverage ÷ π)
Elliptical<path>Two arcs, short axis 0.6 × long axis, rotated to the screen angle
Euclidean<path>Circle below 50%, square with four concave corners above
Line<path>Cell-wide bar, height = coverage × pitch
Diamond<polygon>4 points below 50%, 8-point octagon above

Node count

How many dots a file can hold

The upper bound is one dot per cell: area × LPI². Real art leaves empty cells, so your count is lower.

Maximum dots for a solid 10 × 10 in area
LPIOne plateCMYK (4 plates)Within the 2,000,000 cap
2562,500250,000Yes
35122,500490,000Yes
45202,500810,000Yes
50250,0001,000,000Yes
55302,5001,210,000Yes
65422,5001,690,000Yes

A Mode 2 knock-out also drops every dot outside the choked art mask, which is why a black-shirt portrait carries fewer nodes than the same art screened in Mode 1. Compare both in the preflight before you export.

Software notes

Before you import

What the file contains is fixed; how each program treats it varies.

Design apps
Groups arrive as layers or groups named plate-…; select one group to recolor a whole plate. Heavy files open faster if you hide the groups you are not editing.
Cutting software
Every dot is a closed shape. Below about 0.5 mm, vinyl dots are hard to weed, so use 20–25 LPI for cut work.
Laser software
Each dot is a separate filled object. Set the job to fill, not line, and check the document units read as inches.
Compatibility
We only list a program as compatible after an actual import test. Until then, open one exported file in your software before a production run.

Where it fits

Jobs this page is built for

  • Vinyl and plotter cutting

A coarse 20–25 LPI round dot gives circles large enough to weed. Check the node count before sending.

    Compare shapes first
  • Laser engraving fills

Diamond or round dots at 35–45 LPI engrave as separate shapes instead of a raster scan.

Tune LPI in the main studio
  • Editing separations by hand

Each plate is its own group, so you can recolor, hide or nudge a CMYK plate on its own.

    Make four CMYK groups
  • Checking the film before output

Vector dots are the same geometry as the 1-bit films, so the SVG is a precise reference for the darkroom.

Shop questions

Frequently asked questions

Are the dots real vector shapes or an embedded image?

Real shapes. Round dots are <circle> elements, elliptical, Euclidean and line dots are <path> elements, and diamonds are <polygon> elements. The file contains no <image> elements and no data: URIs.

How is the SVG grouped?

One group per plate: plate-halftone for Mode 1 and DTF, plate-underbase and plate-halftone for Mode 2, and plate-cyan, plate-magenta, plate-yellow and plate-black for Mode 3. Each group carries the plate name, angle and ink as data attributes.

What size is the SVG?

The root element carries the print width and height in inches, for example width="10in" height="6.25in", with a viewBox in thousandths of an inch. Open it at 100% and the dots are their printed size.

Does the node count match the file?

Yes. The Vector Nodes readout is computed with the same engine and the same tone data the server uses, so the number of dot elements in the SVG equals the readout for the same settings.

Why is there a 2,000,000 dot cap?

Very large SVGs become slow or impossible to open in design software. A 14 × 16 inch CMYK design at 65 LPI would hold almost 3.8 million dots, so the studio warns and suggests a lower LPI or the PDF and PNG films instead.

Which programs open the file?

The SVG is plain SVG 1.1: circles, paths and polygons with a fill, inside groups. We have not finished import tests in specific design, cutting or laser programs, so check one file in yours before a large job.

Will the vector dots look different from the films?

Below full coverage each vector dot has exactly the film coverage of its cell. In very dark areas round and elliptical vector dots overlap their neighbors instead of merging, so the darkest tones can print slightly lighter than on the 1-bit film.

Can I get the SVG for free?

The structure preview and node count are free. The SVG file itself is part of the Pro pack together with the 1:1 film PDF and the 600 DPI 1-bit PNG films.
